Inspired by Jay-Z’s The Story of OJ, this piece reimagines the music video as a sharp commentary on the tension between Black identity and the pursuit of capitalism. It explores the irony of O.J. Simpson attempting to transcend his race through wealth, illustrating the hard truth that systemic labels remain regardless of status or credit. I’ve juxtaposed the Pyramids with the Statue of Liberty to highlight a historical irony. While our ancestors built wonders for the culture, modern discourse often credits aliens or non African people before acknowledging Black brilliance. Meanwhile, the figure inspired by the Nina Simone sample strips before a staircase of money, embodying the soul crushing cost of chasing a capitalistic dream that rarely loves you back.
