Pulmone
Porcelain and Sea Glass
The sculpture is an abstract representation of a pierced lung, fired three times at 2200 degrees and coated with gold lacquer to imitate the kintsugi method of repairing broken ceramic pieces. It symbolizes the concept of resilience and the ability to rebuild ourselves after "falling apart". The artwork delves into the relationship between the mind and body, as well as the intersection of disability and mental health. The sea glass embedded in the sculpture represents the pain and the "truths" we were once told that were meant to guide us but ultimately caused harm. At the top opening of the sculpture, a child in a bed can be seen, symbolizing our state before we "inhale" and begin our journey.
